ReSEC Research Group Publishes New Study Exploring the Physics of Two Thermodynamic Lake Ice Models
A new paper published in Water Resources Research, in collaboration with the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), “Exploring the Physics of Two Thermodynamic Lake Ice Models,” critically evaluates the ability of two commonly used thermodynamic lake ice models to accurately simulate ice thicknesses from a Finnish Lake. In collaboration with FMI, the study provides a detailed exploration of parameterization schemes, model physics, and ice processes and provides a set of recommendations for improving future lake ice modelling efforts.
The study underscores current challenges in modelling lake ice processes and highlights the nuances associated with appropriate application of these models. Findings from this study are widely applicable for researchers interested in applying thermodynamic models for simulating ice processes.
